Why Are Americans Allowed Firearms?
By Damien Darko
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the rights of all Americans to keep and bear arms. The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that this right is an individual right and not that of an government body. All Americans can carry firearms. You might ask yourself as an American or foreigner why would Americans need to have weapons to protect themselves. Well, the reality is that firearms are a right that Americans have had since our founding.
The bill of rights of the United States is the fundamental document that provides separation from the rest of the world. In the early foundation of the American republic we found it essential to protect the rights of every American. The first right we provided was the right to free speech, which is the pinnacle of any free nation. The difference that provides separation of the United States from every other nation is the second amendment. This amendment provides the right to arm ourselves and defend our families.
If you look throughout history you will see examples of countries taking away this right and the devastation that followed. Hitler took away the guns and murdered millions, Mao in China did the same. It has been proven throughout history that disarming the populace can lead to a dire situation for minorities, ant-government people, and free thinkers. This is why the United States protects the right to bear arms.
If you look at the United States today you will see that our bill of rights gives every American an equal chance to succeed and fail. It also provides balance to the federal government against overreach at the state level. A lot of Americans don’t realize that the United States is a federation of states in which each state is granted their individual rights. This is another check and balance for the federal government. The federal government was never meant to run every aspect of Americans lives. In fact the early days of the country were managed at the state level. At the end the second amendment provides all Americans the right to be free, protect their family, and raise the American flag high as we celebrate all the other freedoms we enjoy. Don’t fear firearms simply embrace the freedom that they provide for all of us together.
